CAMR ENCOURAGES SENATE TO PASS STEM CELL RESEARCH ENHANCEMENT ACT

The following statement may be attributed to Sean Tipton, president, Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research (CAMR):

“Tomorrow, the Senate will vote on H.R. 810 – the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. A majority of the House, Senate and American people support federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, and we believe this bill will pass the Senate with bipartisan support, as it did in the House.

“While CAMR supports research for all types of stem cells, scientists – not Congress – should determine what sources offer the most promise. Alternative methods for creating pluripotent stem cells are currently being funded, yet they are far from a reality. A vote for S. 2754 and against H.R. 810 is an indefensible position for stalling progress in treating and curing diseases. There is no viable alternative to H.R. 810 – it is the only legislation that is pro-research and pro-cures.

“It is the hope and fervent wish of the 100 million Americans suffering from cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, spinal cord injuries and other debilitating diseases and disorders that each and every Senator do what is right for America and vote ‘yea’ when they are called upon to vote on H.R. 810.

“All across this great country, concerned citizens have been picking up their phones and calling Capitol Hill to make their voices heard, saying that H.R. 810 is the only bill that offers promise to millions of Americans. By lifting the arbitrary ban on which stem cell lines can be federally funded, H.R. 810 truly helps research move ahead to end the suffering of patients and their families. This bill is good for America, and will help us maintain a leadership role in the global field of science and medicine.”
